The local elections taking place across Greater Manchester on 7 May are part of a historical struggle for the voices of ordinary people of all identities and backgrounds. But this hasn’t gone far enough - as the mass discontent with our political system tells us. The next step is for people to have a direct say over the decisions that affect their lives.

Greater Manchester is home to a rich landscape of exciting initiatives, building and campaigning for deeper local democracy, and working to heal divides caused by polarised politics.

Who we are

A coalition of organisations working towards a shared vision of a strong, deliberative and participatory democracy in and beyond Greater Manchester, independent of party politics and electoral democracy.

This coalition currently includes Co-operation Manchester, Greater Manchester Citizens’ Assembly Campaign, and Humanity Project.

Co-operation Manchester is nurturing more connected, empowered, and resilient communities across Greater Manchester by building up the solidarity economy and strong local links through neighbourhood assemblies.

Greater Manchester Citizens’ Assembly Campaign is working to win a permanent, powerful citizens’ assembly for Greater Manchester that enshrines participatory, deliberative democracy at the heart of our city-region.

Humanity Project* is building assembly culture across the UK, creating the conditions for communities to come together, be heard, and shape the decisions that affect their lives, through a growing wave of locally rooted, people-led assemblies – open to all and shaped by communities themselves.

*Humanity Project is hosted by Community Organisers, a national charity and leading organisation for community organising training, support and action in the United Kingdom.
